Fresno Councilman on NFL Protests: Repugnant, Disrespectful, Misguided

Fresno City Councilman Garry Bredefeld waded into one of the most controversial topics on the national stage last week, taking issue with NFL players who refuse to stand during the national anthem. The choice to kneel before the American flag is “repugnant, disrespectful, misguided,” and a dishonor to both the country and themselves, said Bredefeld as part of an impassioned eight-and-a-half minute speech issued during his council report on Sept. 28.

“Our national anthem -- our flag -- represents the men and women who gave life and limb for our country. It reflects their sacrifice so that we can live in freedom.”

Bredefeld didn’t stop there. After summarizing some of America’s greatest accomplishments, he turned to a list of his own “grievances,” ripping the U.S. nuclear deal with Iran, recent measures that ‘weaken’ laws against criminals, gender-netural bathrooms, abortion, a spate of recent cop killings, and more.

“I disagree with all of this, and yet I stand for the flag and our national anthem each and every time.”
