The County of San Luis Obispo (SLO), Information Technology Department, is looking for an experienced Information Technology Supervisor to oversee the County’s centralized network team.  The Network Supervisor will be a key contributor and supervise a team that oversees the County’s enterprise network and telephony services across multiple locations throughout the County.  We are looking for a seasoned leader and network practitioner to successfully lead others, strive to exceed client expectations, inspire and develop staff, and successfully manage a team budget and resources.

 

The Job
This position is within the Infrastructure Division and supervises the network team made up of seven employees.  The network team manages all the data networking and telephony services across the County, which includes 150+ remote sites and provides connectivity to over 3,000 county employees and more than 5,000 network endpoint devices. The County WAN encompasses over 250 miles of private fiber, in addition to carrier-provided switched ethernet and leased data circuits to county facilities and external partner agencies.    

 

This position requires the supervisor be a seasoned network engineer able to advise and support our network team staff and customers; however this position is supervisory and only occasionally provides hands-on technical support.  The network team is comprised of a senior network engineer, four journey-level network engineers, a telephony coordinator and a network hardware specialist.  

 

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have several years of networking experience, is a seasoned leader with supervisory experience, and adept at managing priorities, inspiring and driving a team, managing resources, monitoring and managing a budget of approximately $2.5 million, and developing, hiring, training and managing the performance of employees. You will also be a strategic forward thinker, leverage emerging technology to meet client’s needs, and successfully partner with other technical teams both within and outside the department.

 

Employment Standards

  • Four years of experience in an information technology network administration environment; post-graduate degree in a related field may substitute for one year of the required experience, and
  • Graduate from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in computer science, or a closely related field (job related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis). 

OR

  • An associate’s degree with 60 semester units or 90 quarter units from an accredited college or university, or completion from a job-related, accredited vocational institution, and
  • Six years of experience in an information technology network administration environment.

AND

  • Be willing and able to respond to after-normal workday or irregular and on-call emergency requests on nights, weekends and holidays.

 

IDEAL CANDIDATES

 

Should have knowledge of and experience with:

  • Cisco hardware and software
  • Large, complex distributed networks – core or multiple core environments
  • Network Protocols including MPLS and BGP
  • Wireless LAN
  • Cisco ASA security platform
  • Cisco VoIP
  • Work experience in public sector a plus
  • Cisco Certification: CCIE or CCNP desirable

 

And will have:

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills

Salary: $94,452 – 114,795 annually; depending on experience/qualifications
