To perform unskilled and semi-skilled manual work in the care and maintenance of parks, beaches, sports fields and related landscaped areas. May be assigned to any facility or to a roving crew.
Work hours vary depending upon the time of the year and may include weekends, afternoons, nights and/or holidays.
Incumbent may be required to work stand-by on rotational basis and report to work on a callback basis as needed within a designated time frame. Standby assignment is at the discretion of the Division Head.
This job classification is flexibly staffed, and the position may be filled at either the I or the II level depending on the qualifications of the incumbent and the staffing needs of the city. An eligibility list is being established to fill the current vacancies as well as future part-time or full-time related vacancies.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Depending on assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual work in the maintenance of park grounds, beaches, sportsfields and related landscaped areas.
Performs general groundskeeping and landscape maintenance functions such as mowing, edging, watering, weeding, fertilizing, sodding, raking and cultivating; maintains flowers and shrubs; performs pesticide and herbicide treatment as assigned; ball field prep (infield leveling, dragging, backfilling, and raking); manually waters brick dust infields to provide suitable surface for play.
Lines in-fields for play with chalk; cleans infield based pegs and attaches bases; replaces damaged based pegs, pitching rubbers and homeplates; provides field safety checks and take appropriate actions to correct problems.
Picks up litter and trash from grounds and performs other housekeeping duties including but not limited to sidewalks, parks, beaches, dugouts, and bleacher areas; may be required to inspect, maintain and clean restrooms.
Operates light to medium motor-driven turf maintenance equipment, including tractors and trucks; tows equipment trailers and other related equipment used to level and prepare brick dust fields as assigned; performs minor repairs to keep equipment in running order; performs related duties as assigned.
License: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.
Possession of valid pesticide applicator license issued by the California Structural Pest Control Board at time of application is highly desirable.
GROUNDSKEEPER I: A combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to six months of full-time landscape maintenance, landscape construction, or landscape irrigation, groundskeeping, sportsfield maintenance, and/or professional gardening experience.
GROUNDSKEEPER II: A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to one year of experience comparable to a Groundskeeper I in the City of Ventura. (18 months related experience).
