Division Manager of Planning

The Division Manager reports to the Deputy Director of Planning and Building and oversees the long range and housing team, there is also the potential to oversee emerging cannabis-related projects. This position oversees up to 30 indirect staff and is engaged and contributes to the development of the budget process for the division and oversees project budgets.


The ideal candidate will bring several years of experience in leading staff, managing complex technical long-range planning projects and will have a demonstrated ability to understand the details, as well as the greater planning strategy, and execute a vision toward those goals. This position oversees some of the highest profile projects in the County, as well as serves as a professional liaison with external stakeholders.  A high level of political savvy and emotional intelligence is necessary. The incumbent will be an excellent communicator with the ability to present complex concepts, data and objective recommendations to decision makers. Our ideal candidate brings strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, the ability to inspire others, and execute a cohesive vision.  This leader will be empathetic and will use effective negotiation skills to influence positive conflict resolutions. Coastal planning experience and knowledge of CEQA is highly desirable. We are looking for a true leader, someone who can find creative solutions to get things done and actualize organizational improvements.

Minimum Requirements:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in urban and regional planning, architecture, landscape architecture, geography, natural resources management, environmental, physical or life science, or a closely-related field. (Job-related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)
In addition, five years of experience in urban and regional planning or environmental review and analysis, two years of which were in a supervisory position. (A master's degree or bachelor's degree in two fields such as life science and planning is desirable and may substitute for one year of non-supervisory professional experience.)
A valid driver's license is required at the time of application. A valid CALIFORNIA driver's license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.



Division Manager of Planning: $96,948 – $117,852 annually DOE/DOQ
