Being a Deputy Public Defender I (DPD-I)
The DPD-I performs legal work involving the investigation, preparation, and presentation of criminal and civil cases before the courts. This position will:

  • Investigate, research, prepare, and defend criminal and/or civil cases
  • Conduct general legal research using independent judgment and initiative
  • Interpret and apply laws, court decisions, and other legal authorities for use in the preparation of cases, opinions, and briefs
  • Prepare pleadings, legal reports, opinions, briefs, appeals, and other legal documents in connection with trials, hearings, and other legal proceedings
  • Interview and advise witnesses in regard to criminal complaints


The Ideal Candidate Will Possess:

  • Criminal defense experience as an attorney, law clerk, or other professional legal position, preferably in a Public Defender's Office
  • Impeccable research and writing abilities
  • Demonstrable excellence in public speaking
  • A passion for working in a Public Defender's Office
  • Fluent (reading, writing, conversation) English/Spanish bilingual skills preferred


Qualifications for this position require current active membership in the State Bar of California.
