The Community Development Department is seeking an innovative and dynamic leader for their Planning Division. This position evaluates planning programs, County policies and procedures, and assists with the administration of division budgets while helping to ensure department compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, makes CEQA determinations for projects, and assists department leadership in achieving Board of Supervisor strategic goals and priorities.  Additionally, this position will be responsible for assisting the Director in providing highly responsible and complex professional assistance to the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors.

About the Position

The Deputy Director of Planning manages and administers programs associated with the Planning Division. This position evaluates planning programs, County policies and procedures, and assists with the administration of division budgets while helping to ensure department compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, makes CEQA determinations for projects, and assists department leadership in achieving Board of Supervisor strategic goals and priorities.  Additionally, this position will be responsible for assisting the Director in providing highly responsible and complex professional assistance to the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors.

Candidates must have the ability to leverage the technical expertise of internal and external resources while managing competing demands and have well-developed organizational and decision-making skills that demonstrate innovative ideas while balancing fiscal responsibility.

The Department

The overall mission of the department is to assist the Board of Supervisors and the Planning Commission to provide the means of attaining an environment that protects the health, safety and welfare of the citizens, make judicious use of the County’s resources, reflect the public’s values, and be consistent wit the individual community values.
The Planning/Development Services Division processes building permits and development projects, including any necessary environmental review. Staff regularly prepares reports for review and presentation to the Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors. This Division also prepares, maintains, and implements the Development Title and the General Plan. Code Enforcement staff are responsible for investigating complaints and providing enforcement services for violations of the County’s Development Title. The Building Inspection Division protects the public’s health and safety by regulating new building construction, inspecting existing buildings, and by reviewing new development projects. Additional department functions include Administration, Fire Prevention, and Geographic Information Systems.
