SALARY: ​$211,078 – 282,818 Annually

The Position

The County Counsel serves as the chief legal counsel for the County of Santa Cruz and reports directly to the Board of Supervisors. This position is at-will and is not subject to civil service rules, serving at the pleasure of the Board of Supervisors. County Counsel is responsible for advising and providing legal services to the Board of Supervisors and County departments. Additionally, this position is responsible for managing an office of 12 attorneys and 7 office support staff. The 2018/2019 annual budget of the County Counsel’s Office is approximately $3 million.
  • Primary Duties: Attend all meetings of the Board of Supervisors: 
  • • Manage the County Counsel’s office and budget
  • • Litigate civil actions on behalf of the County
  • • Manage all County litigation
  • • Provide a full range of legal services to County departments including the preparation of County ordinances, draft local laws, resolutions, contracts, and review claims against the County
  • • Manage liability prevention programs and activities
  • • Provide advice to County commissions, committees and advisory groups
  • • Review legislation for County impact
  • • Provide legal opinions on all matters affecting County government
  • • Oversee the Criminal Defense Conflicts Program

Qualifications Extensive experience in the field of municipal law particularly related to:
• Governmental operations
• Land use
• Employment law
• Complex civil litigation
• Administrative law
• State, federal and local laws
• Regulations affecting public agency operations
• Office and budget management
