Fullerton has a rich and proud history. It is blessed with enviable natural and geographical charms. The City and its 144,000 residents enjoy the mild Mediterranean climate found in Southern California. Its geographical location provides several benefits: the City is approximately 20 miles from the Pacific Ocean, it is located alongside major freeway and railroad transportation hubs, it is rich in quality housing, and its topography provides a beautiful system of parks and recreation and scenic opportunities. Over the past decade, the City has revitalized its well-known Downtown area with sidewalk cafes, specialty restaurants, unique shops, entertainment venues, with future improvements currently in the final planning and development stages. The Downtown area also serves as a vibrant cultural center with facilities such as the award-winning Museum Center and the Downtown Plaza. It offers an old town atmosphere with a cluster of more than 70 historic buildings, beautiful shade trees, and decorative walkways. For the recreational enthusiast, Fullerton is rich with parks and over 29 miles of recreational trails. Fullerton also provides residents with two golf courses, two sports complexes, a tennis center, arboretum, the Janet Evans Swim Complex, three community centers, a skateboard park, an equestrian center, and approximately 200 acres of recreational land in the Brea Dam Recreational Area. Fullerton is also home to several higher education institutions, including Cal State University Fullerton, Marshal B. Ketchum (Optometry and Pharmacy) University, Hope International University, and Fullerton College, the state’s oldest community college. In addition, Fullerton is also home to a major hospital, St. Jude’s Medical Center, which provides world class medical care as well as being one of the city’s major employers and community contributors.

The Fullerton City Council is seeking an experienced and dedicated public service professional that is a secure leader, highly competent, energetic, and resilient. The candidate must be able to a build well-functioning executive level team that insists upon pursuing projects and services that provide substantial public benefit. The selected candidate must be innovative and willing to roll up his/her sleeves to ensure tasks are completed. The City Manager must have a wide range of expertise. Finances must be structurally balanced, particularly in regard to identifying new revenue sources; public safety must be maintained at adequate staffing levels while identifying more efficient ways to provide positive and productive services to the community; HR/IT/Purchasing systems must be revamped, modernized, and in compliance with rules and regulations; organizational structures must be evaluated and improved; public infrastructure projects must be initiated and brought to completion; parks and recreation facilities must be right-sized for the available budget and to ensure that what remains is well maintained; economic activities must be pursued while ensuring that municipal codes are respected; and positive and productive relationships must be maintained with the City Council, business owners, and residents.

The ideal candidate for this position must have prior experience as a City Manager, Deputy/Assistant City Manager, or as an Executive Director of a complex public sector organization. A BA/BS in a related field is essential and a Master’s Degree in a relevant field is highly desired.
