Salary open DOQ. Palos Verdes Estates (population 14,000) is one of four cities on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, and is located 30 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles. It has amazing coastal views and 28% of the land area has been dedicated to be permanent open space. Residents enjoy hiking, cycling and surfing, and there are four concessions under the jurisdiction of the City: Palos Verdes Golf Club, Palos Verdes Tennis Club, Palos Verdes Beach and Athletic Club, and Palos Verdes Stables. Every parcel in the City is a part of the Palos Verdes Homes Association (which is separate from the organizational structure of the City) and is subject to CC&Rs. Due to its high quality of life, scenic beauty, excellent schools and low crime rate, in 2019 USA Today ranked the City fifth on its list of America’s 50 best cities in which to live.
Palos Verdes Estates is a general law city operating under a council-manager form of government. The five Council members are elected at-large to four-year staggered terms, and each year the Council selects one of its members to serve as Mayor. The City has a biennial budget and capital plan, with a proposed FY2019/20 budget of $21.7 million and a CIP of $1.1 million. There are 57 authorized staff positions, as well as 15 contract fire service staff. The City has its own Police Department and two represented employee groups. Palos Verdes Estates has a commitment to open government.
The position of City Manager is an at-will position reporting to the City Council. Desire a relevant bachelor’s degree and municipal management experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience. An MPA or MBA is desirable. California experience is preferred. Candidates from both the public and private sectors will be considered, as will candidates who are Assistant/Deputy City Managers or Department Heads, particularly with strong experience in finance. Having worked for an organization with its own Police Department would be ideal, as would experience with a coastal city and having worked in a unionized environment.
