The City of Santa Maria seeks a City Attorney who is customer-service focused, a self-starter, experienced at providing legal counsel on matters related to civil litigation, municipal law, land use (CEQA), employment law, has experience serving public sector organizations, and is an active member with the California State Bar. Our ideal candidate will be an outstanding leader, communicator, business partner, relationship builder, mentor, who is responsive and informed, and can effectively manage outside counsel and lead internal staff.

This is an at-will position that reports directly to Santa Maria’s City Council and is a valued member of the executive management team who works closely with the City Manager and department leaders and their staff on a day-to-day basis. As the chief legal advisor, this position oversees all legal matters for the City Council and staff, represents the City in litigation, acts as legislative counsel drafting laws, ordinances, and resolutions, and oversees outside counsel. The City Attorney’s Office has an operational budget of $1.5 million, and includes 12 employees: two Assistant City Attorneys, three administrative staff, and seven staff in the Code Compliance Division.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
Ideal candidates will be experienced providing legal counsel on matters related to municipal, land use (CEQA), and employment law, and have a background serving public sector organizations. The incumbent will connect with the Santa Maria community by attending cultural and social events and participating on community boards.
Graduation from an accredited law school.
Considerable law experience, and active membership, in good standing, with the State Bar of California.
Possession of valid California Driver License, be insurable with a satisfactory driving record, by the date of appointment.
Able to successfully pass a background investigation performed by the Santa Maria Police Department.
Legal concentration in one or all of the following: land use/CEQA, civil liability, municipal law, and/or employment law. Background serving municipal clients either in private practice, or within a municipal organization, and familiarity working in a union environment.
Salary and Benefits
