Salary:  $167,452 to $234,877 annually


Ventura County is a "general law" county, governed by a five-member, elected–by-district Board of Supervisors. The Supervisors appoint a County Executive Officer (CEO) to oversee the day-to-day operations, as well as to advise, assist and act as an agent for the Board of Supervisors in all matters under the Board's jurisdiction. The Chief of Staff is one of two Assistant CEOs who, along with the County Chief Financial Officer, directly support the CEO. County operations have an operating budget of approximately $2.3 billion with a staffing allocation of 8,900.   The County has excellent financial standing with an AAA rating, the highest possible long-term bond rating, from Moody's and Standard & Poor's. The County excels in its financial and business operations which are based in continuous process improvement and was just ranked as the third best largest County in the United States for its use of technology to improve services and boost efficiencies for the public.

Under general administrative direction of the County Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief of Staff (COS) is an integral member of the CEO leadership team and provides backup support to the CEO, and services as the CEO in his absence.  The COS assists in overseeing the day-to-day operations of County Government; executes and/or coordinates management/administrative policies and directives of the Board of Supervisors (BOS); coordinates or conducts administrative reviews/studies of County operations and procedures; makes recommendations to the CEO and BOS; oversees both the County-wide strategic plan and the County-wide Service Excellence Program (process improvement); supervises assigned County Executive Office functions; and performs other related work with special project oversight on behalf of the CEO.



Qualifying experience would typically include extensive experience as an assistant administrator and/or a key management position of a government organization in which the candidate reported to, or worked closely and regularly with, the principal executive or administrative official demonstrating collaborative, engaged, approachable, strategic leadership; superior interpersonal and communication skills; ability to establish trusted relationship with internal/external stakeholders of a large, diverse public-sector organization/corporate entity; operations management balancing fiscal reality with program needs. Required is possession of, and the ability to maintain, a valid California driver license.
