Job Description

County of San Diego, CA

Chief Administrative Officer
Salary: $252,948.80 to $415,979.20
San Diego County offers generous executive level benefits.
First resume review: Tuesday, February 20, 2024.

The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the County of San Diego is an at-will executive level position reporting to the Board of Supervisors. This outstanding career opportunity is the result of the retirement of the former CAO, following a long-tenured and accomplished career.

The Board is seeking a new CAO who has a proven track record of managing a large mission-driven county with a commitment to furthering the values of equity, excellence, evaluation, accountability, and environmental sustainability. This top executive will bring new solutions to the county enterprise in order to better serve the entire community in a data-driven, sustainable, and equitable fashion.

Qualifications for Consideration
A Bachelor’s degree and significant relevant executive-level experience is required for consideration. A Master’s degree or advanced degree is preferred.

More specifically, the Board of Supervisors highly values county-related experience, particularly in California, although all highly qualified candidates on a national basis will be given full consideration. Additionally, the Board desires a visionary professional with a verifiable track record of accomplishments derived from leading a large, complex, and multi-faceted organization.

Candidates with comparable sized entities (city, special districts, or non-profit organizations) with similar scope and operational issues, are also encouraged to submit credentials for consideration. Candidates with private sector experience and transferrable executive-level skills may be considered if experience is drawn from a mission driven and values-based organization of substantial size and complexity.

Knowledge and experience in working in the greater San Diego region or Southern California is a definite plus.
