ASSOCIATE CIVIL ENGINEER
Salary Range: $103,864 - $135,519 (plus excellent benefits)
Full-time permanent position (subject to probation)

ASSISTANT CIVIL ENGINEER
Salary Range: $89,727 - $117,075 (plus excellent benefits)
Full-time permanent position (subject to probation)

Under general supervision of the Public Works Director/City Engineer, performs various professional field and office engineering work related to the planning, design, construction and maintenance of City capital improvement projects, City infrastructure and daily departmental operations; confers with developers, contractors and representatives of other agencies regarding facility and infrastructure development; administers professional services and construction contracts; provides professional assistance to the Public Works Department, the City Council and others in areas of expertise; performs a variety of studies and prepares and presents staff reports; and performs related work as required.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of civil engineering principles, techniques, policies, and procedures; basic principles of capital improvement cost estimation, project management and contract administration; Caltrans project development process; and applicable laws and regulatory codes relevant to assigned area of responsibility. The Associate Civil Engineer will have skill in conducting complex civil engineering projects, evaluating alternatives, and developing appropriate recommendations; preparing, understanding, and interpreting engineering construction plans, specifications, and other contract documents; interpreting, applying, and explaining complex laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances. The Assistant Civil Engineer will develop those skills while assisting in those tasks above.

Candidates for either position must have ability to effectively represent the department and the City in meetings with governmental agencies, community groups, various business, professional, and regulatory organizations, and individuals, and have experience directing and reviewing the work of support staff on a project or day-to-day basis.

Minimum Qualifications Required

Associate Civil Engineer: Equivalent to graduation from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a related engineering field. Possession of an advanced degree is desirable. Four (4) years of professional engineering design, plan review and project administration experience, preferably in a public agency setting. Must possess a valid California registration as a Professional Civil Engineer (P.E.) at time of appointment. If registered as a Professional Civil Engineer out of state, registration with the State of California must be obtained within six months from date of employment. An E.I.T. certification will be accepted but a P.E. registration must be obtained within one year from date of employment with the City. With the lack of a P.E. registration, the class title will be Associate Engineer until such certification is obtained. Possession at all times of a valid California class C driver license and a satisfactory driving record.

Assistant Civil Engineer: Equivalent to graduation from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a related engineering field. Possession of an advanced degree is desirable. Two (2) years of professional engineering design, plan review and/or project administration experience, preferably in a public agency setting. Possession of an advanced technical degree may be substituted for one year of the required work experience. Possession of a valid Engineer-In-Training (E.I.T.) Certificate at the time of hire may be substituted for the two years of required work experience. At the time of hire, possession of a valid Engineer-In-Training (E.I.T.) Certificate is highly desirable, but not a requirement. However, a valid E.I.T. Certificate must be obtained within one (1) year from the date of employment with the City. With the lack of a valid E.I.T. Certificate, the class title will be Assistant Engineer until such Certificate is obtained. Must possess and maintain a valid California class C driver license and have a satisfactory driving record.
