The San Mateo County Parks Department is accepting applications for an Assistant Director of Parks to assist the Director in planning, organizing, directing and reviewing programs and activities involving the operations, maintenance, protection and improvement of County parks, recreational areas, resources and facilities. The Assistant Director will assume a leadership role in a high-performing and innovative organization that is comprised of highly motivated and engaged staff. Some of the challenges and opportunities for the Assistant Director include the following:


  • Lead management of the capital improvement program for construction projects in the parks
  • Lead the ranger staff to a high level of performance and service to the community of visitors and advocates for San Mateo County Parks
  • Maintain strong relationships with the Board of Supervisors, Partners, Friends of the Park groups, and other stakeholders

Other key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Lead, direct, supervise and guide assigned departmental staff by establishing departmental goals, policies and performance standards, conducting periodic evaluations and ongoing coaching
  • Consult and cooperate with other department managers on all aspects of department services; discuss organization and operations problems; and develop alternatives and strategies and assist in implementation of solutions as necessary
  • Assist in the preparation and administration of the department budget and provide direction and guidance to staff in resource allocation and budgeting
  • Assist in coordinating department activities with other County departments and outside agencies and organizations
  • Research, prepare and present technical, fiscal and administrative reports, studies and correspondence
  • Ensure provision of staff training and direct personnel actions, such as promotions, transfers, discharges and disciplinary measures
  • Assist the Director in negotiating solutions to major issues involving policy, service delivery and other organizational changes
  • Act as the Director in his/her absence
  • Represent Department to Board of Supervisors, County Manager, and outside agencies, groups and organizations; participate in community and professional groups and committees; and provide technical assistance as necessary


We are seeking a leader with over four years of increasingly responsible professional park management experience, at least one year of which was in a senior-level administrative or management position. The selected candidate will have knowledge of the principles and practices of park management and administration; land use planning and development; landscape architecture in park and open space situations; building construction; engineering; and natural resource protection. Knowledge of and experience in budget preparation, administration and control and state & federal grant programs for park programs and projects is required, as is knowledge of pertinent rules and regulations.

Additionally, the new Assistant Director will be:

  • An experienced manager with a sound understanding of parks business management, parks regulations, programs, operations, planning and funding as well as public administration, human resources, budget and finance
