Job Description

The City of Ventura is looking for a skilled, motivated and highly organized Assistant City Clerk to assist in managing the programs and activities of the City Clerk's Office.   We are seeking a dedicated professional, experienced in a municipal clerk’s office or comparable public agency, to deliver services to local residents, elected officials, and staff which encourage public participation and welcomes new ideas. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the Public Records Act, Brown Act, Maddy Act, and the Political Reform Act.

 Reporting to the City Clerk, this Assistant City Clerk is a lead position responsible for supervising a variety of functions within the department with a focus on municipal elections, campaign filings, conflict of interest requirements, and regulations for City Advisory Groups. The incumbent will also provide assistance in the compilation of the City Council agenda packet utilizing an automated agenda workflow system. This role is creative and open to change, performing complex and professional administrative and technical duties, while providing assistance to all City departments, the City Manager and City Council. The Assistant City Clerk serves as the de facto records manager for the City.

This position is designated as "at-will", serving at the pleasure of the appointing authority, and subject to discharge without cause and right of appeal. This position is also designated as "confidential" in the City's Employer-Employee Relations Resolution.

 This position will be required to work weekends, evenings, holidays, on-call and overtime as deemed necessary due to emergency situations and peak workloads.

City Clerk's Office

 The City Clerk's Office works with the City Council, City Manager, City departments and divisions, and the public. The Division has a team of four staff who are responsible for overseeing the preparation of the agenda and minutes for the City Council and Successor Agency; managing the City Council's official records; providing access to public records and information; processing documents to carry out the legislative actions of the City Council; administering the City's elections; assisting in the recruitment of residents to serve on various City Council advisory boards, commissions, and committees; and receiving liability claims.

Position Qualifications

A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to completion of high school and four years of increasingly responsible professional administrative and technical experience in a municipal clerk office or comparable public agency position are required.  

 Possession of a Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) designation is highly desirable. 

 Additional specialized municipal clerk training OR two years of college classes in public or business administration, government, or a related field is highly desirable.

 License:  Depending on assignment, possession of a valid California Class C driver's license may be required.

 Certificate: Possession of a Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) certificate is required within 24 months of employment.

The City offers a total compensation package that includes both a generous salary and other benefits!

  • SALARY: $80,014.48 - $107,220.88 Annually
