Located between San Francisco and San Jose, Palo Alto (pop. 67,657) is the birthplace and heart of Silicon Valley.  A full-service Charter City with a council-manager form of government, Palo Alto has a FY 2021-22 operating budget of $690 million and 950 staff. The City Attorney’s Office provides legal services to the City Council, City Manager, and operating departments. The Assistant City Attorney reports to the City Attorney and will join a team of 12 staff.

The ideal candidate will have a broad background in public law, including, ideally, negotiation and drafting of complex contracts and agreements, municipal finance, human resources, and pre-litigation dispute resolution. Land use and utilities experience are a plus.  Senior level experience in municipal law serving as an Assistant or Deputy City Attorney, including eight years of directly related legal experience is expected. A JD degree from an accredited law school and active membership in the State Bar of California are required. Candidates with higher aspirations are strongly encouraged to apply!
