America’s Most 'Dangerous' Small Town is Right Here in California

Known for its brothels and speakeasies during Prohibition, the small town of Emeryville in Alameda County was once called “the rottenest city on the Pacific Coast" by former California Governor and Chief Justice Earl Warren. Today, the industrial enclave between Oakland and Berkeley still has trouble separating from its felonious roots.

Emeryville is the most “dangerous” small town in America, according to SafeWise. The home security website recently ranked crime-ridden towns based on FBI statistics. It says Emeryville residents have a 1 in 5 chance of becoming a victim of property crime. Larceny-theft was the most prevalent type, accounting for 92% of all reports.

Emeryville was the only California city to make the top 10 most dangerous small towns. It was followed by Saulk Village, Illinois; Glendale, Colorado; Florida City, Florida; Ocean City, Maryland; Marksville, Louisiana; Osceola, Arkansas; Hartsville, South Carolina; Darlington, South Carolina; and Globe, Arizona.
