Health Officials Troubled by Increase in Severe Gonorrhea Cases

Amid an ongoing global pandemic, California officials are now grappling with another public health scare: disseminated gonococcal infections or DGI.

DGI is a severe form of the sexually transmitted disease, gonorrhea — and it is on the rise. Health officials suspect the increase is related to canceled or delayed medical treatments during the pandemic. DGI arises when gonorrhea goes untreated for too long.

Health officials are urging anyone with symptoms of gonorrhea or DGI to reach out to a health provider immediately. County health departments are working with both the state and federal government to understand and slow the spread.
