Is Jed York Trying to Buy Santa Clara?

After years of clashing with local officials, San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York has a real chance to help reshape the Santa Clara City Council. As POLITICO reports, York has spent $3 million on four of the city council races so far. It’s a mind-boggling amount, equivalent to about $100 per registered voter.

York’s supporters say he wants to see fresh faces on the Council and a dais that better reflects the city’s diversity (three of his four preferred candidates are of Asian descent). But critics say his cash drop is an attempt to turn Santa Clara into his own personal “Yorkville.”

“He’s got a stadium — now he wants to buy the City Council,” one local businessman turned activist told POLITICO.
