San Francisco Goes NIMBY on Weed Stores — Again

As of June 1, San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood is off limits for marijuana dispensaries. Under the new Bayview Industrial Triangle Cannabis Restricted Use District, no new cannabis retail establishment can be permitted in Bayview. The ordinance does not prohibit other types of marijuana operations such as cultivation and manufacturing.

The ordinance was the brainchild of District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton and it passed overwhelmingly by a 10-1 vote. Community members in Bayview, which has seen a flurry of redevelopment activity, complained about the impact of retail cannabis on residents’ quality of life.

The new restrictions are reminiscent of a ban on cannabis stores in Chinatown which passed two years ago.

In San Francisco, the NIMBYism runs strong.
