Mapping the Unofficial Death Toll of the 2018 Camp Fire

The official death toll from the 2018 camp fire stands at 86. But the Chico Enterprise-Record has identified at least 50 additional deaths indirectly caused by the worst wildfire in state history.

You can read the heartbreaking report here. It names more than four dozen individuals whose families filed wrongful death claims, alleging they died as a result of the Camp Fire. The reporter who compiled the list, Camille von Kaenel, is sure there are more out there.

Von Kaenel’s accounting is important — and not just because it seeks to honor the victims.

“This is a widespread conundrum after all disasters — how do you tally the complications from the disaster? The problem is that now this expanded death toll isn’t being accounted for in emergency preparedness and plans for community resilience,” she told the Los Angeles Times. “And vulnerable populations are already sort of undervalued and undercounted, anyway.”
