SLO Police Chief Will Have Pay Docked After Leaving Her Gun in a Restaurant Bathroom

San Luis Obispo’s police chief will keep her job despite leaving her firearm in the restroom of an El Pollo Loco restaurant last week. Instead, she’ll be subject to a one-time $1,600 reduction in pay and must undergo new firearm safety training, the Associated Press reports.

Chief Deanna Cantrell left the gun in the bathroom on July 10 after removing it from her holster. A Los Osos man then stole the firearm. He eventually returned it to the police department.

In a video posted on social media, Cantrell apologized for what she called a dangerous and irresponsible mistake. City Manager Derek Johnson said he thinks Cantrell did the right thing by immediately admitting to the error and offering an apology. He added that he has full confidence in her leadership.
