Fortuna Hires New City Manager

The City of Fortuna has hired its first permanent city manager since Mark Wheetley’s April resignation, which followed his sentencing in a DUI case.

After thoughtful consideration of a half a dozen candidates — and with help from a consulting panel made up of top officials from nearby cities — Fortuna has selected Public Works Director and City Engineer Meritt Perry who has also held the interim city manager role for the past several months.

Perry has been employed by Fortuna since 2014 and previously worked as an engineering consultant. That experience has made him keenly familiar with the city’s infrastructure.

Mayor Sue Long said Perry immediately stood out as the best person for the job — a sentiment that panel members Karen Diemer, city manage of Arcadia, and Eureka City Manager Greg Sparks agreed with.

Perry says he is looking forward to assuming the permanent position. He is expected to earn an annual base pay of $126,000.
