This Oregon Town Just Elected a Teenage Mayor

The small city of Yoncalla, Oregon has elected its youngest mayor in history — so young, in fact, that he’s not even of legal drinking age.

18-year-old Ben Simons received 41% of the vote during the Midterm elections last Tuesday, beating out two other candidates for mayor in the town of around 1,000 people.

Simons just graduated high school five months ago, but he believes his skills and ambition defy age. He is already serving as a city councilor and volunteer firefighter while enrolled in General Studies at Umpqua Community College.

Simons, who people have noted looks a lot like Parks and Recreation character Ben Wyatt, says he’ll focus on fiscal responsibility and infrastructure. His term begins on Jan. 1.
