L.A. City Official Killed in Kayaking Incident

Authorities have identified the victim of a tragic kayaking accident in Marina Del Rey as the chief of staff and public information officer for Los Angeles’s Department on Disability.

Nicole Willett, 46, was fatally struck by a large boat while kayaking near the south jetty on Labor Day. Officials say it was an accident and do not believe speed, drugs, or alcohol were a factor.

Condolences have been pouring in from city officials and staff.

“The City of Los Angeles is deeply saddened by the loss of Nicole Willett,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “She will be remembered as a beloved colleague and friend, and an advocate for the community she served with passion as Chief of Staff for the Department on Disability. Nicole dedicated herself to making Los Angeles more accessible and equitable, and my thoughts are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
