Bret Black Hired as Piedmont Fire Chief

Piedmont, California has hired a new fire chief.

Bret Black, who currently serves as a battalion chief for the Clovis Fire Department, was given the nod by the Piedmont City Council on September 17. He will take over at the start of next month.

"Serving as Fire Chief in Piedmont will allow me to be part of a community that values its culture and heritage," Black said. "I look forward to serving the residents and firefighters of Piedmont and to build on the existing talent within the organization."

Black was one of 27 candidates being considered for the job. His extensive experience in fire service was a main selling point, said Vice Mayor Teddy Gray King.

Black began his career in 1997 after taking a job with the Skywalker Ranch Fire Department. He later joined the Clovis Fire Department, steadily rising through the ranks over the years.

Black will replace former chief Bud McLaren who recently retired after a 30-year career.
