Greenfield’s Ex-City Manager Plans to Sue

Greenfield, City Manager Jaime Fontes was terminated Friday during a closed vote of the city council. His attorney now says he’s preparing to sue the city.

Greenfield would not comment on Fontes’ firing, but the motion said he was terminated without cause pursuant to his employment contract. Fontes claims there’s much more to the story.

According to attorney John Klopfenstein, Fontes was let go for refusing to fire a city department head.

"The city council cannot, and there's case law on this, cannot get into telling a city manager what to do," Klopfenstein said. He added that his client’s lawsuit could reach in excess of $1 million.

Friday’s vote was 3-2 with Council Members Lance Walker, Leah Santibanez, and Mayor Jesus Olvera Garcia voting to terminate.

Greenfield Finance Director Tim Wood has been hired as the as interim city manager.
