Meet the ‘Drone Killer’

The proliferation of unmanned aerial technology and its interference with emergency personnel has become a public safety nightmare for local governments. But that may soon be changing, thanks to a new device that can shoot down pesky drones that interfere with firefighting aircraft and emergency helicopters.

The Oceanside Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are among the first to experiment with the new technology. They want to be clear that the so-called ‘drone killer’ is for emergency situations, however, not for shooting down UAVs snapping pics in your backyard.

“The purpose is primarily for emergency situations,” Oceanside police Lt. Aaron Doyle said. “It won’t be used when someone complains about a neighbor flying a drone. It’s pretty much for a life-or-death situation, to save lives.”
