Breaking News: San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee Dead at 65

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee died suddenly Tuesday morning at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, according to a statement from his office. Mayor Lee was 65 years old and not known to be in ill health.

Former Mayor Willie Brown said he believes Lee died of a heart attack, but that has not been confirmed by the mayor's office.

Board of Supervisors President London Breed has taken over as acting mayor of San Francisco, effective immediately. She is the first black woman to ever serve as the city’s mayor. Lee was the city’s first Asian-American mayor.

Politicians from across the state and country reacted with shock and sadness upon hearing of the death of Mayor Lee. Mourners have set up a makeshift memorial outside of City Hall.
