L.A. Hires Director for New Cannabis Regulation Dept.

Mayor Eric Garcetti has appointed Cat Packer to head the new Department of Cannabis Regulation for the City of Los Angeles. The former Drug Policy Alliance policy director will oversee city regulation and taxation of cannabis sales in L.A. She was appointed at 4:20 p.m. on Wednesday.

Council President Herb Wesson called Packer a “trailblazer” in cannabis policy who will bring coveted knowledge and energy to the city. In a statement, Packer said she hopes to champion “responsible, equitable cannabis policies that will serve as a model for the rest of America.”

The Department of Cannabis Regulation was created in June following voters’ approval of Measure M. Packer’s appointment still needs to be approved by the City Council.
