San Jose’s HR Director Joins the Brain Drain

San Jose Human Resources Director Joe Angelo has accepted a job as the HR Director for Alameda County. He’ll be leaving the city on June 26, ending a three-year run recruiting the best and brightest for city government.

It’s a bitter irony. San Jose has lost a number of professionals to surrounding municipalities recently and now the person charged with attracting and retaining them is joining the ranks of the departed himself.

“San Jose has been a great learning experience for me and I’ve had incredible opportunities and successes,” said Angelo. “But when the opportunity came to work and live in Oakland, I was excited and decided to live there. They’ve got some great restaurants, events and hiking.”

The city currently has 800 to 900 vacancies, including 200 in the police department. Airport Director Kim Becker and Harry Freitas are among those who have recently left San Jose.

Angelo is going to see a modest salary boost. He was making $217,348 in San Jose. His salary in Alameda County will be $228,215.
