Starting a Family? Consider One of These 10 Cities.

It costs an estimated $233,610 to raise a child in this country, and that figure is far higher if you’re doing it in the Golden State. It also doesn’t include the emotional toll of all those sleepless nights, potty training, and booboos.

But there are ways to make raising a family easier on the body, mind, and soul (and pocketbook!). These include picking the right location for starting out. And, on that front, SmartAsset has you covered.

The personal finance site recently ranked the best California cities for raising a family. SmartAsset looked at cities with populations of 500,000 or more. It took into account economic statistics and home values; cost of childcare; demographics (e.g. the percentage of the population under the age of 20); education; and crime.

According to SmartAsset, these are the top 10 cities in California for raising little Susie and Johnnie:

1. Roseville

2. Fremont

3. Torrance

4. Livermore

5. Pleasanton

6. Temecula

7. Rocklin

8. Redondo Beach

9. Mountain View and Davis (tied)

Data is compiled and reported by SmartAsset. Report does not reflect statistics on all 482 California cities.
