Ben Wong Appointed to Fill West Covina City Council Vacancy

Former West Covina City Council Member Ben Wong will return to the dais temporarily to fill a vacancy left by retired Council Member Steve Herfert.

The council voted to appoint Wong to the seat on Tuesday. Council Member Mike Spence opposed the appointment, saying the decision should have been left up to voters during a special election.

Steve Herfert stepped down in February after more than two decades of service. A total of 8 candidates, including activist Lloyd Johnson, resident Kimberly Caceres, and former commissioner David Stewart applied for the position.

Wong, a public affairs manager for Southern California Edison, said he does not intend to run for election in November.

“I am applying largely as an alternative,” he said. “I don’t have a future agenda.”
